Anita Levering

Anita Levering explores the use of unpredictability of environmental conditions in the creation of large scale abstract paintings. She investigates the materiality of paint through dissolution and subtraction to research transformation. Notions of authorship and unpredictability are examined through the engagement of external forces such as weather and environmental duration to dissolve the painted surface. Environmental conditions outside of the artists control open up a methodology distanced from subjective intention. This work navigates the territory between intentional and unintended outcomes, the structured and the organized, order and disorder. The work itself becomes the site of traces of an experience, a document of dialogue with uncontrolled external forces, drawing out new connections in the viewers experience. Anita has been a finalist in several NZ art awards, in 2011 she won runner up at the prestigious Wallace Art awards.
