Matthew Browne

Matthew Browne was born in London in 1959. He studied painting at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts gaining a BA (Hons) in 1982. Further studies in New Zealand at Elam School of Fine Arts led to an MFA (Hons) in 2000. Browne has exhibited his work widely throughout New Zealand and the UK. He has work represented in private collections in New Zealand (most notably in the collection of the Prime Minister, John Key), UK, Australia, Denmark, Singapore, Canada and the USA. Public collections include the Parliamentary Collection, Wellington, The Royal Overseas League, London and The James Wallace Charitable Trust, Auckland. In 2005 he was the joint winner of the 'Peoples Choice Award' at The Wallace Art Awards and in 2008 was awarded a 'Merit' at the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards in Hamilton. Artis Gallery in Auckland and Mark Hutchins Gallery in Wellington represent Matthew Browne. Matthew Browne say's of his work "I see my painting and sculpture as a way to encourage and make visible those metaphorical images and sensations that normally reside deep in the unconscious. I like to believe that I am embracing Rudolf Arnheim's statement that "Truly productive thinking takes place in the realms of imagery"
