Susan Webb

Wellingtonian Susan Webb enrolled in art classes in 1988. In 1996 she was awarded artist membership of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and she has served as vice president on its governing board: a journey that has recognised Webb as one of New Zealands highly regarded painters. Susan has curated various exhibitions and was a judge in the Telecom New Zealand Art Awards. Having been born in New Zealand, to travel abroad and return is the jolt that tells Susan this is the land to which she belongs. This is reflected in her aim to paint till she dies, to keep experimenting. The mystery of colour and light and the desire to express these elements is the creative challenge for Webb. Susan Webb paints her stunning New Zealand landscapes mainly in oils with gutsy gestures, increasing abstractionism and unexpected colour. Her large canvases and hangings are moody and emotional, reflecting intimate moments in her life. Dark tones are balanced with sudden brush strokes of light to create a focal point. Her exhibitions in New Zealand and overseas have been prolific, whether solo or joint. She also conducts numerous lectures and interviews and features in publications dedicated to her work.
