Artist - Tony Ogle
Tony Ogle is known as one of New Zealand’s leading screen printers.
He is famous for producing limited edition screen prints and paintings celebrating the New Zealand coastline.
Residing in Gisborne, in his home overlooking Wainui Beach, and working from his restored studio in town, Tony continues to be fully entrenched in the lifestyle and beach life that is New Zealand. His art is wonderfully capable of transporting the viewer to a moment of local coastal gold.
The Art Bureau asks Tony about his art and inspirations...
- How & why did you decide to become an artist?
I never wanted to do anything else as much – is probably the short answer to “why?”. Beginning with a short sharp career in commercial design, I transitioned into a lifestyle where I could do my ‘own’ artwork whilst odd jobbing. Then in my early twenties I began learning the screen printing technique – fortuitously at around the same time as printmaking was picked up as a worthy art form by the wider art buying public.
- How would you describe your art style?
Mediated – Representational.
- Why do you create this kind of art?
It’s a personal response to being and living in a particular location. Sensing dramatic and compositional opportunities from landscapes that themselves are imbued with an innate sense of place.
- How do you know when a work is finished?
It lets me go .... or I stop wanting to modify/manipulate any more.
- What has inspired you recently?
Mural work around Gisborne (Sea Walls Tairawhiti – Artists for Oceans collective).
- When not creating art – what do you enjoy doing?
Family, movies, books, travelling, hiking, surfing, beachcombing.
Tony describes printing as a dynamic process that demands a high level of concentration in order to pick up any irregularities when, or preferably, before they happen.
