Alan Gilderdale

Alan Gilderdale was born and educated in England, attending the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He then taught for a number of years before coming to New Zealand where he has lived for the past twenty years. Gilderdale is interested in history and myth which both find expression in his paintings. His main preoccupation however is with the actual processes of painting,- the composition, line, shape and colour. Gilderdale has had several solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand and has participated in group shows internationally. He received first prize in the Pump House Awards and was a finalist in the Team McMillan Ford Competition. He obtained a travelling grant to Australia and was the recipient of a government scholarship that allowed him to work in an art centre in Belgium, specialising in lithography.
