Bruce Edman is a New Zealand based artist whose work can be seen in Auckland, Hong Kong and Los Angeles. Bruce's professional art practice started in 2002 while still an undergraduate at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design. His abstract paintings are process driven with an emphasis on materials and materiality. Conceptually his works are informed by Chaos Theory and Systems Theory anchored in what he terms Asymmetric-Symmetry. As such, the works explore entrophy, erosion and disintegration as the boundary conditions of our material existence an exploration into the fact that overtime, we basically fall apart. Bruce works in dyes, varnish and raw paint pigments. He recently began incorporating encaustic (hot wax) shalleck and gold & copper leaf which results in paintings with a Bas-relief, lending them a three-dimensional feel. Early in his career Bruce was influenced by the work of Jackson Pollack and Gerhard Richter while visiting San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The chaotic spontaneity of Pollack and the clean technical precision of Richter have both influenced his art practice. His later work is influenced by Auckland artist Jill Sorensen's early encaustic art while adding gold leaf gilding techniques.
Bruce Edman’s work is process driven with an emphasis on materials and materiality. Working with dyes, varnish, wax, shellac, raw pigment and gold leaf, Bruce’s work is richly textural and evocative of landscape.
