Art Exhibitions: The Art Experience
We have so many clever artists who create works of an exceptionally high standard. While they would love to share their art with many… they inadvertently can become a ‘best kept secret’ until you (the art appreciator) actually discover them for yourself.
Doing this in person, face to face with the original piece of art, perhaps with the artist in attendance – well once you start that experience, you won’t stop.
Attending an art exhibition can be a breath of fresh air as you uncover a world of creation you may not have realised was available.
For a perspective buyer
To better understand the style of art you may want to ultimately own, attending some group shows can demonstrate the variety accessible. It can help you understand what you like, why you like it and even change your opinion on styles you previously thought you wouldn’t consider.
You will also benefit from the knowledge of the curator. A curator’s role is to hand-select artists and works that deliver to the chosen theme. So for you the visitor, think of it like spotify serving you new songs into your playlist – though it’s not a mechanical algorithm picking pieces, but an intelligent human being! The curator gives you an insiders view on the pieces, styles and options that bring that theme to life, many of which you may never have discovered alone.
In our world of online art surfers, exhibitions bring you into the presence of physical art :)! Seeing the contours, the layers, possibly the mixed media applied. Appreciating the scale of a piece – surprisingly petite or triumphantly large. And the colours; real and unfiltered, loud or subtle. At the end of the day, this is really the only way to enjoy it.
From the view of the Artist
It’s an opportunity to shine and showcase a culmination of years of effort and developed skills. And to let others in on the secret – NZ artists are producing exceptional works.
And from the Curator
Exhibition curator Rebecca Tune describes the way she selects pieces as a process. “Initially we decide on the theme and a vision of how the total selection might come together. The artists are involved as well. Sometimes they have a piece that simply shines and works perfectly with the theme. It’s exciting to have these conversations with so many artists. It’s also a pleasure to push the parameters – ensuring we ultimately deliver artworks that communicate the core of the theme, but also delight with some unexpected, thoughtful diversity and variety.”
“You have to acknowledge that art is a highly subjective thing, though skill and technique typically stand out quite clearly.”
So what’s next for Auckland’s Art Exhibition scene?
Artweek Auckland is coming up from 12th to 20th October – a fabulous 9 days of art exhibitions and visual art celebrations. It’s well worth putting in your calendar and consider visiting a number of the events planned.
The Art Bureau Gallery is looking forward to being a part of Artweek again this year with a new exhibition entitled “Networks and Grids”, in the planning stages now.
If you time your visit for the opening evening it’s also a great night out – a bit of culture, a drink, the ambience of a Gallery.
Make it a goal. Get your art experience happening – attend an art exhibition and enjoy it. Who knows what art or artist you may discover.
